Eats - Old Oakland: District's Oakland Wine Bar Opens Friday 4/27—With Whiskey
Great News: happy hour from 4-6.
Eats+ Development: Food Emporium Planned for Uptown
Maybe this will be like Market Hall for Uptown. Sounds good as long as it is open 7 days a week. :)
Eats: The B edition: Beer and Burgers
There’s a new burger spot on Lakeshore, Flipside.
Housed in the now-shuttered Adam’s Burger, Flipside serves up a wide variety of burgers, fries and shakes in a bright, colorful space.
Like the other recent additions to the neighborhood, Flipside emphasizes its premium ingredients. Their menu promises that they use “100% all-natural certified Angus beef that is ground fresh daily. And is never frozen. Our beef is brought up with strict husbandry principles and never treated w/ hormones or antibiotics.” They also offer vegetarian options with veggie burgers and salads.
Eats: Uptown Edition - a bakery and another bar
First up, a new bar-restaurant
A new bar-restaurant called Hop Scotch is on its way to Oakland’s Uptown district, to the former Chef Edwards Bar-B-Que spot at 1915 San Pablo Avenue (between 19th and 20th), about a block and a half from Hibiscus.
A bakery with a connection to the King of Pop
Mani Niall, who worked for the late megastar back in the 80s and has bore the moniker of “former Michael Jackson chef” ever since. But he admits to the East Bay Express that he likes how it “gets people talking.” Niall, who was also executive chef for Just Desserts’ wholesale operation, is opening a new all-day bakery-café called Sweet Bar in the former Mimosa Champagne Lounge at 24th and Broadway, in Oakland’s booming Uptown district. The plan is to have coffee and baked goods in the morning, sandwiches at lunch, and beer and wine with savory and sweet stuff at night. He’s aiming for a summer opening.
Eats: Boot and Shoe’s Pizza Free Cousin, Old Oakland Rumors
Diablo Magazine has lots of good stuff this week (lots of stuff happening in Walnut Creek too):
Over in Grand Lake
Charlie Hallowell, the maestro behind the molto popular Italian/California eateries Pizzaiolo and Boot & Shoe Service, has another Oakland restaurant up his sleeve. This one, a bar and grill concept, will be right across the street from the recently expanded Boot & Shoe … at 3307 Grand Avenue. According to someone with knowledge of the plans, the new restaurant will not be focused on pizza…
BTW, Boot and Shoe is now open for lunch.
And in Old Oakland
More big Oakland news as it looks like San Francisco’s beloved sausage-centric Rosamunde (it’s one of those places that has 1,200 reviews on Yelp) is opening a new location in Oakland.According to Inside Scoop, Rosamunde applied for a liquor license at 911 Washington Street
Development: City says Broadway Valdez Plan is still on
After numerous reports of death, the City decided to reiterate the Broadway-Valdez Plan is still in the works, even though there are no longer redevelopment funds.
The Broadway Valdez District Specific Plan process is alive and well. Three community workshops were held on the Draft Plan Concept between April and December 2011; city staff and the consultant team are currently working on preparing a Draft Specific Plan and commencing the environmental review process.
Completing the Broadway Valdez District Specific Plan is a top priority for the city of Oakland, and part of a larger strategy of improving the overall Broadway Corridor. For instance, the city of Oakland was recently selected by the Urban Land Institute’s Daniel Rose Center to participate in its 2011-12 Fellowship Program. This year-long program is intended to benefit the respective fellowship cities through technical assistance on a local land use challenge. Oakland’s selected land use challenge is focused on defining the Broadway Commercial Corridor. Also, the Caltrans-funded “Broadway Transit Alternatives Study” will soon begin, and its objectives and timeline will be coordinated with the ongoing Broadway Valdez District Specific Plan process.
I have been to several meetings over the years, and the plan in its current incarnation is logical and needed. Just because there isn’t a redevelopment agency, doesn’t mean the city should neglect a central neighborhood, and this should fit in with other city initiatives.
Eats: New Whiskey Lounge at Jack London opens 3/16
Music, cocktails, cozy chairs, and bordello theme. Sounds like a winner for me. The Night Light opens on Friday.
Raise a tumbler to The Night Light, a two-story cocktail sanctuary with a nautical, cabaret-themed whiskey den and an upstairs live music venue, opening Friday in Jack London Square.
Kicking open its doors just in time for a single-malt-fueled blowout means that it’ll be here if you want to come clad in your emerald-hued best. ….
The woodsy ambience pretty much calls for straight whiskey, but there’s also the hometown favorite, Linden Street’s Burning Oak Black Lager. Either way you go, you’ll want to park in the oxblood-leather wingback chairs and melt into the seafaring/bordello feel of the place.
